powder post beetles in door

We have found exit holes and sawdust in the door and door frame of our home. We purchased the home new in 2011 so it is only 1.5 to 2 years old. What should we do to ensure that the beetle infestation will not spread in the house if we replace the front door and door frame?

As explained in our article, the exit holes are a sure sign where larvae are active. So if you do decide to replace the door and pull it out, be sure to treat all the exposed structural wood of the home with Boracare to insure it doesn’t contain anything active. I’m talking about studs, rim joists, molding, etc.

Next, any part of the new door that’s unfinished should be treated with Boracare too. Do this before you paint or stain. So if possible, get the door completely unfinished and do a thorough treatment. It will be easy and only takes a couple of days to cure. This insures you’ll have it properly protected and remember, just because it’s new does not mean it’s beetle free. So if you want to avoid having the same issue again, treating it when it’s still unfinished with Boracare is the only way you can insure you take care of any beetles that might be lurking inside the wood.
