poplar flooring removed with powder post beetles
Just removed 400 sq ft of engineered wood flooring where the PPB’s had devoured the Poplar plywood under the veneer. My questions: Is removing the flooring good enough? What are the chances they are in the house framing etc? The subfloor was “dry deck” wax sprayed T+G plywood. Shows no signs of PPB’S. I want to do everything I can to prevent further problems. Thanks.
As explained in our powder post beetle article, the most common sign of activity of having a beetle problem is when you are seeing their exit holes. With that being said, its not possible to determine if wood has active beetles unless you’re finding holes and/or frass. So even when you have access to the wood underneath the flooring like you do now that the poplar has been removed, it’s not likely you’ll be able to tell one way or another unless you’re finding holes. In other words, there could very well be larvae in this exposed wood feeding away. But since they won’t leave until their adults, you won’t see any evidence. This makes knowing if the wood has a problem or not virtually impossible.
And with that being said, the only sure way to both kill and prevent future problems is to treat any all of the under decking – along with any new wood flooring installed – with BORACARE. This way if there are any beetles in the newly installed flooring or in the surrounding subfloor, decking, etc., the Boracare will be there to insure the problem is controlled and doesn’t get worse.
